Sympathy

What do you send when there is nothing right to say?

There is nothing you can say, and you still want to send something.

The card

What to write

We write the card by hand, exactly as you send it. Take one of these or change it so it sounds like you.

  • I am thinking of you and your family.
  • There are no words. I am here if you need anything at all.
  • With deepest sympathy. She will be remembered by a great many people.
  • I am holding you in my thoughts through all of this.
  • I am so sorry. Please do not feel that you need to reply.
  • I am sending you my love from far away.
  • I hope his memory brings you comfort in time.
  • Nothing I say will help, so I will only say that I am here.

Timing

When to order

Funerals here usually happen within a few days. If the piece is for the house, please tell us and we will work to that. If the date has already passed, the almsgivings at seven days, three months and a year are all proper moments to send something, and none of them is too late.

What most people get wrong

Grief lasts a great deal longer than the week when everyone is present. If you are deciding between sending something now and sending it at the three-month almsgiving, either one is right. If you are deciding between sending it late and not sending it at all, please send it late.

What if they are unwell rather than gone?

A get well message sits in a different register, and it should not borrow this one. It is allowed to be warm, light and even funny, because you are assuming that they will recover. A household in the middle of something has nobody free to look after anything extra, and a piece like this asks nothing of anyone.

  • I hope you get well soon. There is nothing here for you to look after.
  • Here is something cheerful for the windowsill. Please rest properly.
  • I hope you feel better soon. The office is doing fine, which must be annoying to hear.

If you are not sure what to send, ask.

There is no wrong answer and no hurry. Tell us a little about them and we will help you choose.
