Five-fold symmetry, and why so many flowers use it
Roses, apple blossom, buttercups and hibiscus all repeat the same arrangement, and there's a reason for it.

Five-petalled arrangements dominate the eudicots, which is the group containing most of the flowering plants people recognise: roses, apple and cherry blossom, buttercups, geraniums, hibiscus and frangipani. Threes dominate the monocots, which is where lilies, orchids and most tropical flowers sit.
Fours exist but they're comparatively rare, and true sixes are usually threes doubled. Once you know this, you can sort most flowers at a glance.
Why five rather than four or six
The arrangement is set long before the flower opens, in the packing of the bud. Petals and sepals are laid down in a spiral around a growing tip, and each new one goes into the largest gap its predecessors have left.
That placement rule produces divergence angles closely related to the Fibonacci sequence, and for many species the arrangement it settles on is five. Five is the arrangement that packs a growing bud most efficiently, and the flower is simply what the packing unfolds into.
What it means for building one
Five petals don't sit at ninety degrees to anything, which is why a five-petalled flower built on a mental grid always looks wrong. The angle between neighbours is seventy-two degrees, and the eye reads an error of even a few degrees as a flower that's somehow lopsided, without being able to say why.
The practical method is to place the petals in the order one, three, five, two, four rather than in sequence, so the arrangement stays balanced at every stage rather than only at the end.
The irregular spacing is the point
A five-fold arrangement never looks mechanical, and that's precisely because five doesn't divide evenly into the visual field the way four does. There's no axis of mirror symmetry that also lines up with the vertical, so the eye keeps finding new relationships in it.
This is why five-petalled forms turn up so persistently in ornament, from Gothic tracery to textile block printing, long before anybody understood the botany that produced them.

What is pentamerism, in plain terms?
Pentamerism is the botanical name for a flower whose parts are arranged in fives, or in multiples of five. The petals, and usually the sepals behind them, sit in a ring of five around one centre. It is the pattern underneath a great many of the flowers you already know by sight.
Why do so many flowers have five petals?
The count is set in the bud, long before the flower opens. Each petal forms in turn and drops into the widest gap the earlier ones left, an arrangement botanists call phyllotaxis. Successive parts turn by about 137.5 degrees, the golden angle, and for many species that steady turn settles on five.
A garden rose has dozens of petals. Is it still a five-petalled flower?
Underneath, it is. A wild rose has exactly five petals, and its close cousins in the apple and cherry family share that plan. The crowded garden rose is the work of centuries of breeding, which coaxed the parts that would have been pollen-bearing stamens into extra petals. The five-fold frame still sits underneath.
Do four-petalled and six-petalled flowers exist?
They do, though fives outnumber them. Real fours turn up in the mustard and cabbage family, whose four petals sit in a neat cross, the reason it was once named Cruciferae. Genuine sixes are rarer than they seem, since most six-part flowers are threes doubled: three petals with three petal-like sepals mirroring them.
Are all five-petalled flowers symmetrical in the same way?
Not all of them are. Most five-fold flowers are radially symmetrical: turn them and every petal matches the next, like a wheel. Others with five petals, such as snapdragons and pea flowers, are built along a single mirror line instead, with a distinct top and bottom. Botanists call the first kind actinomorphic and the second zygomorphic.
Does the five-fold pattern show up anywhere besides the petals?
It often does. In many five-petalled plants the sepals, and the seed chambers at the core, follow the same count. Slice an apple across the middle and the pips sit in a five-pointed star, because the flower that became the fruit was itself built in fives. The pattern runs right through the plant, not only its face.
Why does a five-petalled flower look more natural than a four-petalled one?
Four and six settle onto an upright square or honeycomb grid, and the eye reads that regularity as manufactured. Five never lines up with the vertical that way, so no mirror axis stands straight and the eye keeps finding fresh relationships. The deep reason is that a regular pentagon cannot tile a flat surface at all.
Real flowers aren't perfectly symmetrical. Should a handmade one copy that?
A little variation helps. Petals on a living plant differ slightly in size and spacing, and a flower bent to mechanical perfection can look more machine-made than a real one ever does. A piece shaped by eye carries that faint looseness on its own, and the craft lies in choosing which small differences are worth keeping.
Five-fold symmetry sets the count, but what decides the shape of each petal?
Those are two separate questions. Five-fold symmetry fixes how many petals there are and how evenly they ring the centre. The outline of each petal is a different matter, and most petals rest on a vesica, the lens shape made where two circles of equal size overlap and cross.
Is correct symmetry enough on its own to make a handmade flower look right?
It is necessary but not sufficient. Correct five-fold spacing makes a single flower look right up close, which is the first thing a viewer checks. Whether the whole piece holds together from across a room is a separate question of overall size and outline, and that is where scale and silhouette take the lead.
Does the studio's own mark use five-fold symmetry?
It does. The mark is five shapes spaced evenly around a single centre, the same five-fold arrangement this article describes in a flower. Once you have noticed the pattern in a wild rose, you see the mark as one more place the same balance turns up.
