Humidity, oxidation, and the wire you cannot see
Colombo is humid all year round. Here's what that actually does to a wire core, and what it doesn't.

Craft wire is generally steel with a thin protective coating. As long as that coating stays intact it keeps moisture off the steel at household humidity, and no oxidation happens at all.
Once it's damaged, it doesn't. Every cut end is bare steel, which is why cut ends are the only part of a piece that can genuinely corrode.
Why cut ends are turned inward
People usually explain turning cut ends into the centre of a bind as a safety measure, and it is one. It's also a conservation measure, because an end buried inside a bound bundle and wrapped is far less exposed to moving humid air than one on the outside.
This is a case where the durable choice and the comfortable choice happen to be the same choice.
What humidity doesn't do
It doesn't affect the fibre, which is synthetic in most modern stems and takes up almost no moisture. It doesn't cause mould, because there's no organic material to feed it. It doesn't soften or relax the wire.
Every one of those assumptions comes from caring for dried flowers, where all three are genuine problems.
The one real risk in a tropical house
The real risk is prolonged direct wetting. A piece caught in monsoon rain or left near a leaking window can wick water into the core along a cut end, and rust will then travel inside the stem where nothing can be done about it.
The response is immediate and simple. Stand it upside down somewhere dry and airy, out of the sun and away from direct heat. Drying it fast matters far more than drying it gently.
Common questions
Does Colombo's humidity rust the wire inside the flowers?
No, everyday damp air will not rust it. The wire sits inside a chenille stem, also called a pipe cleaner, and craft wire is generally steel under a thin coating. While that coating holds, it keeps household humidity off the metal, so nothing oxidises. Steel rusts only where bare metal meets moisture, and that is a cut end.
Will a made flower grow mould in a damp, humid house?
No. Damp air alone will not raise mould, a worry carried over from dried and preserved flowers. Those are plant matter, so humid air really can grow mould on them. A made flower is mostly steel wire and stem fibre, and it asks only that you keep standing water off it, not that you keep the air dry.
Can humidity soften the wire and make a stem droop?
No. Damp weather does not soften the steel, so a piece holds its shape and will not wilt like a cut stem. The core keeps the form it is bent into, whatever the season. If a stem or petal has shifted, that is handling, not moisture, and the wire lets you bend it back to hold a shape.
Can I keep a piece in a humid room such as a bathroom?
Yes. A normally steamy room such as a bathroom will not harm a piece, because humid air on its own does nothing to the wire or the fibre. The single thing to keep off it is liquid water. Set it where steam and damp air can reach it freely, but where splashes, drips and shower spray never land.
Should I worry about condensation from an air conditioner or a cold window?
Only the water it leaves behind, not the humidity itself. Condensation is damp air turning to droplets on a cold surface, so a windowsill running wet or the tray beneath an air conditioner holds real water. Keep a piece clear of those spots. Away from where moisture beads and collects, condensation is nothing to plan around.
Do the cut ends of the stems rust over time?
Only if they get wet. A cut end is the one spot where the steel sits bare, since cutting exposes metal past its coating, so it alone can corrode. Even so, a bare end stays sound at ordinary indoor humidity. Turning it inward into the bind and wrapping tucks that metal away from moving air, and from fingers.
What should I do if a piece gets soaked or caught in the rain?
Dry it fast. Prolonged wetting is the real hazard, because water can travel into the wire along a cut end and rust it from the inside, which cannot be undone. Stand the piece upside down somewhere dry and airy, out of the sun and away from heat like a heater or hairdryer. Speed matters far more than gentleness here.
Where is the worst place in a house to keep a piece?
The worst spot pairs water with sun. A leaking sill, a ledge that catches monsoon rain, or a counter beside a sink can wet a cut end, while a sunny window fades the dyes over months. Do I need silica gel, a sealed case, or a dehumidifier to protect a piece?
No, none of it is needed. Silica packs, sealed domes and dry rooms protect organic mementos, like dried flowers, that pull moisture from the air. Craft wire and stem fibre take no water from humid air, so a shelf out of direct sun is all it needs. Keep it dry to the touch, not the room.
How is caring for a made flower different from caring for dried or preserved flowers?
Nearly all of it falls away. Dried and preserved flowers are plant matter, so humid air can mould, soften and decay them; they need dry storage. A made flower is steel wire and fibre rather than blooms, so damp air does not act on it. The domes and dry rooms brought from them are effort it never asks for.
How long will a made flower last in a tropical climate like Colombo's?
For as long as you keep it dry. Humidity is not what ages a made flower: the wire is protected and the fibre takes up almost no moisture, so damp air changes nothing. Light is the real clock, and only in direct sun, so a piece out of the beam holds its colour and shape season after season.
