Light and fading: the only real clock
Photodegradation is the single mechanism that ages a made flower, and you can avoid it entirely.

Dye molecules absorb light, and the absorbed energy occasionally breaks a chemical bond in the part of the molecule responsible for its colour. Break enough bonds and the colour is gone. The process is called photodegradation, and it's cumulative and irreversible.
Ultraviolet does the most damage per photon, but visible light contributes too, which is why fading still happens behind ordinary window glass that blocks most ultraviolet.
Why pink goes first
Different pigments have different bond energies, so they fail at different rates. Reds and pinks are typically the least stable, blues and violets come next, and yellows and browns are generally the most durable.
The practical consequence is that a mixed bouquet doesn't fade evenly. It shifts, because the pinks leave first and what remains is a warmer, more yellow version of the original palette.
The dose is what matters
Fading depends on the total light a piece accumulates, not on peak brightness. An hour of direct sun daily for a year does far more damage than a single very bright afternoon.
This is why the useful instruction is about position rather than intensity. Move the piece one metre out of the direct beam and you have solved the only genuine ageing problem it has.
What museums do, and what's worth copying
Conservators control light exposure in lux-hours, rotate objects in and out of display, and use ultraviolet-filtering glazing. Almost none of that is proportionate for something in a house.
The one habit worth borrowing is rotation. A piece turned a quarter turn every few months fades evenly rather than developing a bleached side. It costs nothing, and it's the difference between ageing and looking damaged.

Common questions
What actually makes the colour fade over time?
Light does, and nothing else. The dye in the fibre absorbs light, and that energy slowly breaks the bonds that hold its colour, so the shade weakens and can't come back. Age, still air, dust and handling all leave it untouched. Only the light a piece actually takes in will fade it.
Is it direct sunlight or ordinary daylight that fades colour faster?
Direct sunlight fades colour far faster, by a wide margin. Soft, indirect daylight in a room that never catches the sun does very little. Ultraviolet does the most damage per photon, but visible light contributes too, which is why a piece in a bright window still fades slowly even though the glass blocks most ultraviolet.
Do indoor lamps or LED bulbs fade a piece the way the sun does?
No, indoor lighting doesn't fade a piece the way sunlight does. Household bulbs, including LEDs, give out a tiny fraction of the light energy that direct sun delivers, so they do almost nothing to the dye. It's sunlight landing on a piece that fades it, which is why a room lit only by lamps stays safe.
Does glass in a frame or a display dome protect the colour?
It helps only a little. Ordinary glass blocks most ultraviolet, but it lets visible light straight through, and visible light fades dye too. So a frame or a glass dome slows fading slightly without stopping it. Keeping the piece out of direct sun protects the colour far more than any glass in front of it ever will.
Do darker colours fade faster than pale ones?
Darkness itself has little to do with it. How fast a colour fades comes down to the dye's chemistry, not to how dark it looks. A deep brown will often outlast a pale pink beside it. The reliable guide is the pigment, not the brightness: pinks and reds give way first, and warm yellows and browns hold longest.
Will a piece fade just from age, even kept out of the sun?
No. Nothing inside a piece is alive, so time on its own changes nothing, and one kept in shade simply stays as it is. Fading is driven entirely by the light a piece gathers, so there's no expiry date and no fixed timescale. Light is the only thing that moves the clock.
Where is the worst place in a home to keep a piece?
A sunny windowsill is the worst place, because strong direct light is what fades the dyes over months. A bright room away from the direct beam is fine. What matters is the light landing on the piece, not the warmth of the spot, so a shelf out of direct sun keeps its colour longest.
Can dusting or cleaning rub the colour off or damage it?
No. The colour is dye bonded into the fibre, not a coating on top, so gentle dusting can't rub it away or dull it. Cleaning does nothing to fading either way, because that comes only from light. Keep cleaning dry, though: water can mark the cotton fibre and reach the wire. Humidity and the wire core explains that.
Once a piece has faded, can the colour be re-dyed or restored?
No. The fading is permanent, so lost colour can't be brought back, at home or by us. Re-dyeing over faded fibre doesn't take evenly, and swapping in fresh petals leaves a piece looking patched. The honest options are to prevent fading first, or to have a new piece made. Repair as a discipline explains why.
If a piece fades, does that mean it was faulty?
Usually it doesn't. Colour that softens slowly over years in a bright spot is ordinary ageing that every dyed object shows. Colour that fades within the first year of a piece kept out of the sun is not normal, and the studio would want to look into it. Where it's been kept tells the two apart.
If a piece has to sit somewhere bright, does turning it help?
Turning it helps a little, but it's not the main fix. A piece stuck in a bright spot fades more evenly if you give it a quarter turn every few months, so no one side bleaches first. That only spreads the fading out, though. Moving the piece out of the sun's path is what actually slows it.
