A moulded plastic petal has a smooth surface, so it reflects light specularly, which means at a matching angle and in a concentrated highlight. That's why artificial flowers photograph with hard bright spots and look synthetic even when the colour is perfect.
A fibre nap scatters light in every direction. The surface has no single reflection angle, so it produces the soft even glow that fabric, felt and skin all share, and that living petals share too for entirely different reasons.
Why it survives distance
Fine detail disappears at three metres. Surface quality doesn't. Somebody across a room can't resolve a petal edge, but they can absolutely tell the difference between a diffuse surface and a shiny one, and that's why texture is the property worth protecting when something has to be simplified.
This is also the practical argument against over-detailing. Effort you spend on tiny edge shaping is invisible from a sofa. Effort you spend keeping the nap uncrushed is visible from the door.
Crushed nap, and why it shows
Fibre that has been compressed lies flat, and flat fibre reflects specularly the way plastic does. That's why an over-tight binding shows as a dark shiny band. The colour hasn't changed at all, only the direction the light leaves in.
It's largely irreversible. You can tease fibre up with a soft brush shortly after it's crushed, but fibre that has been held compressed for weeks has taken a set.
Colour behaves differently on a nap
The same dye looks lighter on a dense nap than on a sparse one, because more of the light bouncing back has been scattered by fibre rather than absorbed at the core. Two stems from the identical dye lot can therefore look like different colours if their densities differ.
In practice this means you have to match colour with the actual stems side by side, under the light the piece will live in, and never from a supplier's colour name.
Common questions
Do the flowers feel as soft as they look?
Yes. A chenille stem is a wire core wrapped in a soft fibre nap, so it feels close to felt. The short fibres that scatter light into a glow are the ones you touch, so the look and the feel match. The wire stays inside, so a petal keeps the shape you give it while the surface stays soft.
How is this different from an ordinary artificial flower?
The surface sets them apart. A moulded or glossy artificial flower has a smooth skin that reflects light in one hard direction, so it shows bright highlights and reads as manufactured even when the colour is right. A fibre nap breaks light up and sends it everywhere, so it keeps the matte, fabric-like look the eye trusts.
Do they look real, or can you tell they are handmade?
Across a room the soft, matte surface reads as warm and alive, because surface quality carries over distance while fine detail does not. Up close they are openly handmade: you see the looped fibre and hand shaping, meant as part of the piece, not hidden. They are a different kind of object from a fresh flower, not a copy.
Why does the same flower look a slightly different shade in different rooms?
Because the fibre surface scatters whatever light falls on it, the shade you see depends on the light in the room. The same piece looks warmer under lamplight and cooler by a window, though the dye has not changed. Colour on a soft nap is the dye and the light working together, not a fixed value.
Why do the flowers seem to glow when the light is behind them?
Because the nap is a pile of fine fibres standing off the core, light from behind catches their tips and scatters at the edges, so the outline lights up in a soft halo. A smooth plastic petal has no standing pile to catch that light, so it just falls dark instead.
Does the soft texture flatten or wear out over the years?
Left standing, the nap keeps its loft. Nothing in it is organic, and sitting in a room puts no wear on the fibre, so it stays soft for years. What flattens a nap is pressure, from a tight tie or a long spell boxed up. Held for weeks it sets the fibre flat, but kept upright, that never happens.
My flowers look a little dull. Is that dust, and can I fix it?
Usually it is dust, not fading. Fine dust settles into the nap and mutes the way it catches light, so the surface looks greyer and dimmer than when new. A soft make-up brush, or a hairdryer on cool and low, worked outward from each centre, lifts the dust and the loft back together. Full care instructions walk through it.
One flower has a dark, shiny mark where it was tied. What is that?
That is crushed nap, not a stain or dye change. Pressed flat, the fibre reflects light like a mirror instead of spreading it, so it shows as a dark, glossy band. A soft brush helps early on. Once the fibre has set, the nap will not come back, and the fix is replacing that stem, not reviving the pile.
Why can't a nap colour be matched from a code or a screen?
Because colour on a nap is not a fixed value you can name. The same dye reads lighter on a dense nap than a sparse one, and shifts again under different light, so a number cannot pin it. That is why a match is made by eye, with the real stems under the light the piece will live in.
Does Colombo's humidity dull the surface or make the flowers limp?
No. The fibre nap is synthetic in most stems and takes up almost no moisture, so damp air does not swell it, make it limp or dull its colour, and it keeps scattering light the same way. The one thing to keep it from is direct wetting, such as monsoon rain through an open window.
Does sunlight change the surface, or only the colour?
Sunlight fades the dye, not the texture. The nap keeps its soft, light-spreading surface, but strong direct sun over months breaks the colour down, and the pinks go first. Keep a piece out of the direct beam, and turn it a quarter every few months, and the colour stays even for years. Light and fading explains the mechanism.
What is the "nap" you keep mentioning, in plain terms?
The nap is the short, soft pile of fibre that stands out from the wire core of a chenille stem, also called a pipe cleaner. Each tuft is trapped between two twisted wires with no glue, so it stands upright like felt or velvet. That standing pile throws light in every direction and gives the flowers their soft look.
